My Every Day Carry

Date: July 23, 2024

The things I carry with me every day.

Phone: Nokia 2780

The Nokia 2780 is a phone you can survive. This phone was my first experience with a “dumbphone” so it took some getting used to. The T9 keyboard is shockingly quick to get the hang of and consistently easy one handed typing is unexpectedly convenient. My biggest gripe with this phone is the horrendous screen. It is a tiny TN panel so the viewing angles are horrid. When using this phone outside I am often forced into a hunchback position with my nose nearly touching the bottom of the phone in an attempt to read a text message. However, I really appreciate this cell phone for being a first step on a journey of getting my life back. I plan on switching this out for my new Light Phone III when that arrives in ~May of this year.

MP3 Player: Sony NW E394

This MP3 player is awesome. I really appreciate the design style and have nothing but good things to say. I will have to replace mine soon as the battery is beginning to swell. The battery life is very short but the device itself is the size of my thumb so I am not too critical of this downfall.

Pocket E-Reader: Obook S1

I dread this device. It was originally purchased on aliexpress for ~$100. I bought it on reddit for $50 from the great James Scholz! This device can only be used in chinese and there is little documentation about it online. From what I can tell about tinkering with it and doing a bit of research this is often used for students in china. That being said I would burn the house down if this thing every became connected to the internet. It is not to be trusted under any circumstances. It has served me well and you just cannot beat that price but I am on the market for something more convenient soon. Man pocket e-readers get expensive.

Opensea Leather Houbei 2.0

This is a fantastic little leather wallet hand made in Honolulu, Hawaii. I am just beginning to break it in but ~1.5 years of ownership and I love it. Beautifully made and beautifully priced. I believe I optioned mine with Olive and walnut leather.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

This was the book I was reading at the time of taking this photo and I never ended up finishing it. It has some very interesting lessons but the writing “style” being a series of 1 paragraph thoughts unrelated to eachother became exhausting. One day I will pick it back up.

E-Reader: Sony PRS-505

I love this ereader. It is very old e-ink technology but I still really enjoying reading on this. The 2010’s Sony design language is so awesome. It doesn’t have a backlight so unfortunately it will be replaced one day when I am fed up enough. The ui of it is a little frustrating and it is very slow, but it isn’t a race.

My ThinkPad x60 doing work!

Laptop: ThinkPad x60

My specific x60 actually has an x61 mainboard swapped into it. It is still a middle spec Core 2 Duo, however, it is a 64bit C2D and that is what matters. I purchased this laptop from r/thinkpadsforsale from a gentlman in China who had an x60, T60, and R61 in a storage unit gathering dust. He just wanted shipping to the USA paid for so I ended up getting all three for around $60 which I am thrilled about. The x60 arrived with some serious polarizer damage, but nothing a screen replacement couldn’t fix. I plan on upgrading the screen oneday to an IPS panel but for now this is perfect. I plan on making a separate post about software but this laptop runs gentoo linux and SOWM. 10/10 would snag again. By far my favorite computer I have ever owned.

I carry Nothing Earbuds(a) while out and about and Nothing Earbuds(open) from time to time if I want to hear the birds as well as my music.

That’s about it! I think things will change quite a bit this summer when I get my Light Phone III but for now these are the things I take with me through my day!
